Description:
One of a group of mine buildings, situated at 1,000ft on the flank of the Helvellyn Range. Popular routes to Striding Edge and Swirral Edge pass the door, and there is quick access to Ullswater and the Eastern Fells.
Facilities:
Sleeping platform is on the first floor. There is a slate cooking area, cold tap and toilet, plus electric lighting. Nearest pub is only 1 mile away, with the nearest village store only 1.5 miles away. Popular walking on helvellyn and surrounding fells. Rowing and Sailing on Ullswater.
Directions:
From the M6 jcn 40, follow signs for Keswick for about a mile. Turn left at the roundabout following the signs to Ullswater. On reaching the Lake, turn right, following the A592 along the western shore for 9 miles as far as Glenridding. Turn right in Glenridding as if entering the car park, but continue past the car park entrance and take the next road on the left signed for Helvellyn Youth Hostel. After half a mile it becomes a driveable track. Follow this road up the Valley for about one and a half miles. Go past the Youth Hostel 100 metres, through a gate, across a bridge and park round the back of the building on your right. Swirral Barn is the upper or western end of this building. From Windermere, go over the Kirkstone pass on the A592, turn left in Glenridding and continue as above. |
